The Lie of Cannabis Prohibition

Why is marijuana illegal? Why is it called marijuana instead of its proper name of cannabis hemp? In the 1930′s, a new machine was invented that made it much cheaper to use the pulp from the cannabis hemp plant. This threatened the profits of William Randolph Hearst from his forest paper pulp business and the DuPont company from their bleaching and plastic making chemical processes. They teamed up with Harry Anslinger in the U.S. government and invented marijuana out of whole cloth. Hearst’s newspapers ran sensationalist stories about the harms of this evil weed, and those stories were used as evidence in congress to pass a tax on marijuana. The congress people who voted for this legislation didn’t even realize that marijuana was the same cannabis hemp that they were growing in huge quantities in their states.
This disgusting, criminal lie started the cannabis prohibition industry. Prohibition has continued based on more lies. There is not a shred of truth in any of it. In fact, smoking or eating cannabis is nearly harmless, as anyone who has used it knows from personal experience. In the history of the world, noone has ever died from a cannabis overdose. In every way, cannabis is safer than alcohol, tobacco, and aspirin.

Not only that, cannabis hemp has a myriad of useful industrial and medical uses. It makes cheaper and better paper than trees, it can be used to make building materials, you can burn the seed oil as fuel and eat it on your salad or in your baking. The seeds are a complete protein on a par with or better than soy as a vegetable source of protein. Cannabis is the best known medicine for treating nausea due to cancer or AIDS drugs. It not only eliminates the nausea completely, it restores appetite (you know, the munchies). And the list goes on. I have only scratched the surface of its uses.

By any rational standard, cannabis should be available over the counter, in bulk in your local health food store for a few bucks an ounce.

This is not the point, however. Even if cannabis were a potent poison, adults have the absolute right to put anything into their bodies that they please. Doing so is not a crime. It has never been a crime. It will never be a crime. Crimes have victims. Smoking and selling cannabis has no victim. Only the initiation of force against another person or their property is a crime. Crime may not be legislated into being.

So who are the criminals here?

Criminals: the legislators who make the prohibition laws. Criminals: the lie enforcement officers who arrest people for possessing vegetables. Criminals: the judges who disallow medical evidence and jury nullification. Criminals: the juries who convict these peaceful people. Criminals: the jailors who lock them up. They are all guilty of assault and kidnapping or conspiracy to commit assault and kidnapping. Serious felonies. Kidnapping is a capital offense…

But even this isn’t the point. The war on some drugs has nothing to do with drugs. It is a war on freedom. A war on the Bill of Rights. A war on America’s soul. Drug sellers and users are to modern-day America what the Jews were to Nazi Germany. A focus for hate. A reason to make fascist laws that are rapidly destroying our constitutional republic. Stop this madness before Amerika’s final solution makes the holocaust look like a romp in the woods.

End the war on freedom. End it today. Stop the lie while you still can.

Answer: Not so much dust; mostly water.

The question: What is man made of?

Or “ugly bags of mostly water”, according to one of those sticks in your mind phrases from a TV show –
“Home Soil” 1st season episode #18 of Star Trek: The Next Generation
(Wikipedia plot summary)
["Home Soil" How's that for an intriguing episode name?]

Overview: The crew of the Enterprise discovers a crystalline life-form with murderous intelligence.
…
…
[the life-form represented by] … a cluster of several points of light. Data works with the computer on the analysis. The computer relays its composition: silicon, germanium, gallium arsenide, cadmium selenide, water, sodium crystals…forming a natural superconductor array. Elsewhere, an engineer reports that the power fluctuations are increasing, causing numerous systems around the ship to go haywire; something is taking over. Soon, the universal translator comes online by itself, “Ugly bags of mostly water!” Picard is confused, and Data indicates it is an accurate description of human physiology; he points out that humans are 90% water surrounded by a flexible container. (This is actually incorrect; humans are about 60% water with variation by gender and body type. Also, bones and tissue are found throughout the body and do not form a flexible container with water inside) …

Another site follows up on the Ugly Bags of Mostly Water theme with a scientific review of The Chemical Composition of Human Biology

What’s our chemistry? Everybody knows that we are mostly made of H2O: about 65% of our substance, actually. The crew of the starship Enterprise, under the command of Captain Jean Luc Picard, was once creatively insulted by a dry, crystalline life form: the humans were slandered as “ugly bags of mostly water.” The wee crystal beasties certainly pegged us chemically! …
…
Suppose you wanted to make a person from raw elements. What would be on your shopping list?

If you had a ray gun that could reduce a human being to elements, you’d have a whole lot of hydrogen and oxygen from all the water — approximately ten gallons worth — plus a bunch of carbon and nitrogen. You could just barely make a brick out of the remaining couple dozen elements. … [ingredient chart in article] …

Huh?
I thought we was dust.
Even like the 1977 hit single by Kansas: “Dust in the Wind”
OR
as in Genesis 2:7: And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
Where did the moisture come from?

I thought about titling this entry: “Did God Slobber?”
Maybe the shaping of “man” was so hilarious that God spewed his drink with the “breath of life”.

And what is this “breath of life”? Is it exhalation or inhalation? Does the original Hebrew express the relative humidity of God-breath? Did He inhale some primordial ooze and then exhale into the man-dirt pile?

When I think of “dust” I envision something seriously desiccated. OK. I checked the interlinear. The proper translation appears to be “soil”. That is the limit of my linguistic scholarship skills. If someone of more advanced academics wants to opine, knock yourself out. I guess “dust” just sounds more poetic to translators.

Maybe there is some scientific verification for composition comparisons. I vaguely recall some anecdotal mention, in some lecture or sermon, that common dirt had all the basic elements and proportions for a human body. Well, scratch my head and ask: “Are all dirts alike in ph and compound and microbial portions?”

Yes microbes. A stat that I find interesting is –

The human body has some 10 trillion human cells—but 10 times that number of microbial cells. …

I had previously read from “A Short History of Nearly Everything” by Bill Bryson — on Page 303:

“… They just seem to like to be with you. Every human body consists of about 10 quadrillion cells, but about 100 quadrillion bacterial cells. They are, in short, a big part of us. From the bacteria’s point of view, of course, we are a rather small part of them. …”

[The 10:1 ratio is same for both sources but quantity discrepancy of "quadrillion" as opposed to "trillion" is a puzzlement.]

Following the embed link to the article on bacterial cell count, I found an answer to a question I have held about the spatial occupation comparison related to the count ratio:

All the bacteria living inside you would fill a half-gallon jug; there are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells, according to Carolyn Bohach, a microbiologist at the University of Idaho (U.I.), along with other estimates from scientific studies. (Despite their vast numbers, bacteria don’t take up that much space because bacteria are far smaller than human cells.) Although that sounds pretty gross, it’s actually a very good thing. [emphasis added]

In our symbiotic affinity with dust, we are essentially a host to, or in part, a colony of microbes; I am a cellular co-op. So did God gather from primordial ooze or strictly use divine mud?

A Living Soul: Not So Much Dust; Mostly Water.
An ugly bag of mostly water? Maybe.
Ugly being in the eye of beholder.

Sometime awhile back and somewhere in blog comments at Planet Preterist, I noted the observation of how scripture has a Rorschach quality (which no one that I am aware of responded to).
From my current reading I have, interestingly, ran across an essay by an atheist that tackles the moral argument and mentions:

Far from being a truly independent guide to moral conduct, the Bible is more like a Rorschach test: which passages people choose to emphasize reflects as much as it shapes their moral character and interests.

– Elizabeth Anderson (from If God Is Dead, Is Everything Permitted?) Quote taken from Book Review: The Portable Atheist

Now notice a couple striking parallels from scripture:
1. 1 Corinthians 13:12
“For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.“
2. James 1:23
“For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror.“
===============

And on TV Sunday, November 15, 2009 –

All the homes are built with nothing but reeds. “Without reeds, you can’t have this way of life. Reeds are the skeleton of these people’s lives,” Alwash said.

The house of reeds is called a “mudhif.” Alwash wanted one as a meeting hall for his project, and we were there to watch the construction. It is made of nothing but reeds bound by reeds.

The arches are planted in the ground and pulled into shape. Then woven mats cover the top. Alwash’s mudhif is 15 feet tall and 70 feet long. It is where we did our interview and where one of the village elders came to entertain us, singing traditional songs.

Looking at 5,000-year-old carvings, it is easy to see close similarities of the structures then and the mudhifs of today.

Near the marshes, the Sumerians erected a temple at the city of Ur, known as a ziggurat. The Sumerians thought the marshes were so important they wrote a story about them.

The story goes that the gods grew angry at man, so they sent a deluge to cover the Earth. One of the gods thought that was a terrible idea, so he warned one man to build a boat and save all the animals.

The people of this region came up with that story hundreds of years before the Old Testament gave us Noah. (emphasis added)

(page 3 of transcript for the segment — Iraq’s Marshlands: Resurrecting Eden – 60 Minutes – CBS )
An intriguing footnote in a remarkable story of revival after severe devastation by tyranny

Would [politician who claims to support freedom] support the right of a nine-year-old girl to walk into a hardware store and, without signing anything or producing identification of any kind, pay cash for a submachinegun, several hundred rounds of ammunition, and a supply of morphine? If he wouldn’t, then whatever he’s in favor of, it isn’t freedom.

This may take a while to feel out … (10/12/09)
===========

(11/2/09) No sooner than I think I can start with putting thought to text,
I get writer’s block and flounder in how to proceed. It is like a mental
saddling up to ride off in all directions at once. Sometimes the thought
work is just slow for me. Sorry. I will not likely ever be fast in posting
or prolific since I watch and read and live under so much and various
diversions and obligations. Welcome to modern living self …

My objective in this blog is to explore the principles and pragmatics of
liberty as a primary emphasis with a sense of how they are sourced in the
sovereignty of “Truth” anchored in a faith reality.

The term “Theopraxy” came to mind and turns up in web search with listings for a book written by Michael Benedikt titled:

God Is the Good We Do: Theology of Theopraxy

One review notes Benedikt’s 7 tenets which begin with notions that –

1. God is not a person or thing or principal or spirit. God is activity of a certain sort: the free doing of good, where by “good” we mean that which preserves, honors, or promotes all forms of life.
2. God is not the Creator. Nor is God all-powerful or omniscient. God is the newest and weakest “force” in the universe, a human production, even as God -good doing- produces humaneness in turn.

I am not yet ready to surrender “God” to recapitulation as a mere
“activity” of “human production”. I may have to come up with a term
other than “theopraxy”, even though the root meaning falls in line with
my intended emphasis for this blog.

I will have to add Benedikt’s book to my reading list for further study.
